SWARTZ CREEK — The Swartz Creek competitive cheer team placed fourth at a competition on Saturday. — L.P. Wheelchair hoops slated for Feb. 10 SWARTZ CREEK — Two pro wheelchair teams will roll into town on Feb. 10 in the third annual fundraiser that helps raise awareness about disabilities and staying active. Because it’s a bye week for the varsity teams, the boys’ varsity team will take on one team from wheelchairs at 7 p.m. followed by the two wheelchair teams facing off after that. Also taking part in the fundraising event is Creek student and wheelchair basketball player Justin Coburn, and Josh Parsons, who is afflicted with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. “It’s just a really nice way to bring the awareness to our kids and community,” said athletic director Sue Calvo. A $5 donation is encouraged at the door to benefit Noah’s Feet and Muscular Dystrophy. — L.P. Local youth rolls perfect game FLINT TWP. — Chase Kaufman, 14, rolled a 300 game in bracket format at Town and Country Lanes on Saturday, Jan. 28. It was Kaufman’s fifth and final game after rolling 185, 168, 177, 217, 300. Kaufman quipped during the game, “I felt like i was going to throw up”. He’s believed to be the fourth or fifth youngest to roll a 300 in the Flint area. — L.P. Youth football camp offered by Flint Fury FLINT — The Flint Fury will host a youth football camp May 26 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at Atwood Stadium. Following the mantra that football offers youngster skills to play football, but more importantly offers life skills and opportunities, the camp will focus on physical fitness and team building, while learning the game. Proper coaching, academics, health and safety will be the top focus. The camp is geared to kids ages 7-12 and registration starts at the door at 8 a.m. Details: www.flintfuryfootball.com — L.P. Warriors partner with Goodwill on Feb. 25 game FLINT — The Michigan Warriors have partnered with Goodwill Industries on a promotion that will benefit the local community. Anyone who donates to Goodwill on or before Feb. 25 will receive a coupon for reduced admission to the Warriors’ game that night. Michigan will play Springfield at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 at Perani Arena. Goodwill stores/donation centers are open Monday-Saturday 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.-5 p.m. For a listing of locations, visit www.goodwillmidmichigan.org. Junior Generals currently on seven-game win streak FLINT— On Sunday the Flint Junior Generals of the NA3HL beat the Battle Creek Revolution 7-0 as Grand Blanc’s Cody Damon assisted on the games very first score and posting a goal and two assists was Swartz Creek’s Andrew Lay. The difference in this contest for Flint was the fact it outshot Battle Creek 68-14 after taking leads of 2-0 and 3-0 at the end of the first and second periods. Last Saturday it was more of the same as the Junior Generals outshot the Revolution 72- 8 on their way to a 7-2 victory. While Battle Creek did grab a 2-0 lead at the end of the first, it was all Flint from there as Damon got the ball rolling less than a minute into the second with help from Davison’s Nicholas Goettel and Lay. The Junior Generals, 27-7-0-3, is at Battle Creek tomorrow and hosts Cleveland on Sunday. — M.S. Adaptive seminar and conference on tap today GRAND BLANC — Strength Training and Recovery Corp will host a seminar, exhibit hall and free movie screening for disabled sportsmen and women today, Feb. 2 at the Genesys Banquet and Conference Center, 805 Health Park Blvd. Health professionals will take part in a wheelchair seating and positioning session from noon - 5 p.m. The public is invited to the free exhibit hall and movie screening of The Movement directed by Robert Redford and Warren Miller that runs 5-7 p.m. Vendors will have various adaptive sport, hunting and recreational offerings on display. — L.P. Alumni ice event open to all skaters FLINT — On March 23-25 Flint Iceland Arena, 1160 S. Elms Rd., is offering a High School Alumni Hockey Tournament for $650 per team with age divisions that include 18-30 and 30 and over. Period length for this event will be 13, 13 and 14 minutes, players skating for a school they did not attend or coach will be disqualified without refund and each squad is guaranteed three games. There will also be Tshirts issued to the winning team and, because of USA Hockey rules, $100 of entry fee will go back to each school’s athletic department. Details: www.flinticeland.com. — M.S. Keeping pace during the winter months SWARTZ CREEK — As part of the Swartz Creek Community Education Program, Indoor walking at the Middle school and Cage Field house will continue through the winter months until the weather breaks in the spring. Walking hours are Monday–Thursday 8-10 a.m. at the Cage and 6-8 p.m. at the Middle school. Participants are asked to come into the community education office to register and pay the $20 registration fee. An ID badge will then be issued that walkers must wear at all times while paticipating. Walkers must sign in and out with the on-site supervisor. — L.P. Hardwood action for the 30-and-over set SWARTZ CREEK — 30 and over Basketball is being offered through the Swartz Creek Community Education Program. Anyone over age 30 is welcome and pre-registration is not required. Fee of $3 per person is required or a punch card can be bought for $20, good for 10 visits. Hoops runs Tuesday nights from 7-9 p.m. at Gaines Elementary in the gymnasium. — L.P. Pickle Ball at the Cage SWARTZ CREEK — Pickle Ball—a combination of ping pong, tennis, and badminton— has been enjoyed for more than 45 years by people of all ages and is offered at the Cage Fieldhouse through the Swartz Creek Community Education Program. Instructors are on hand to assist beginners, equipment is provided, but anyone is welcome to bring their own. Pickle Ball is available Tuesday and Thursday 10 a.m.-noon. Cost is $3 per person or a punch card is available for $20. — L.P. County parks open to snowmobilers, skiers GENESEE COUNTY — Yes, you can snowmobile and ski in the Genesee County Parks. Snowmobiling is permitted in the following locations: Linden County Park, Bluegill Boat Launch, Buell Lake County Park, Richfield County Park, E.A. Cummings Center, and Walleye Pike Boat Launch when the terrain is frozen and there is a 3-inch accumulation of snow. Note: snow on the ground is not an indicator of frozen terrain.
