GAINES – A miscommunication could lead to a little confusion at the polls in the village of Gaines next month.

Three village council members’ terms are expiring, and a fourth must be elected to complete her appointed post, but it doesn’t look like anyone is running.

“We have candidates,” said village Clerk Luanne Kondel. “They’re all seeking re-election. They’ll just be write-ins.”

Kondel said this year, the Secretary of State changed the filing deadline.

“It was in August,” said Kondel. “This year, it was July 22. The state usually contacts me (when there are changes). They always contacted me before, but this year they didn’t. And I missed it.”

In order to be a legal write-in, all candidates must file declarations of intent by Oct. 24.

So far, Councilmembers Carol Erickson, James Savage and Barb Ferris are seeking re-election without opposition, said Kondel.

In addition, Kathy Volkening, who was appointed following the resignation of Donna Archambeau, is running to retain her seat. Volkening also is unopposed.

Anyone else interested in serving on the Gaines Village Council should pick up a declaration of intent from the village offices.
