Dragons swim to 6th in County Meet

Photo by Dan Nilsen FENTON – Selena Adams and Rebecca Bade reached the championship finals in three events, and Swartz Creek/Flushing finished sixth in the Genesee County Invitational swimming and diving meet last Saturday at Fenton High.

Sophomore diver Katelyn Niezgucki also gave the Dragons a high finish, taking third with 351.90 points, as Creek/Flushing totaled 145.5 points.

Perennial champion Grand Blanc swam away with the team title with 616 points, far ahead of runner-up Brandon’s 312. Fenton was third in the nine-team field with 305, followed by Powers Catholic with 199 and Kearsley/Clio with 177. Behind Creek/Flushing, a new co-op this season, were Davison with 135.5, Lapeer with 109 and Holly with 100. Lapeer had also just beaten Holly in a dual meet last week.

Adams took third place in the 100- yard backstroke, tying for that spot with Davison’s Megan Russell in 1:07.72. Adams was also eighth in the 100 butterfly in 1:14.35.

Bade was seventh in the 200 freestyle in 2:17.59 and swam on two relay teams that placed in the championship finals.

The 200 free relay team of Alena Benjamin, Julia Genovesi, Kamerin Gerow and Bade placed fifth in 1:55.82. The 400 free relay squad of Bade, Kaitlyn Anderson, Adams and Benjamin took fourth in 4:07.09.

Swartz Creek/Flushing will swim at Brandon in a Metro League dual on Oct. 9.
