Pair qualify for golf regional

Photo by Dan Nilsen DAVISON – One area team and three area individuals advanced to a Div. 1 regional golf tournament this week by qualifying in last Thursday’s district at Davison Country Club.

Grand Blanc’s team and individuals Garrett Jewell and Hunter Hull of Swartz Creek and Haywood Petty of Carman- Ainsworth will play in the regional at Currie Golf Course in Midland on Friday. The top six teams and top six individuals not on those teams moved on from the district.

Grand Blanc finished fourth in the district, shooting 328. Noah Troyer and Logan Price led the Bobcats, shooting 79 each to tie for sixth individually, while Alex Finsterwald overcame a tough front nine to shoot 84, Trevor Bailey carded 86 and Anthony Castanos 87.

Jewell also shot 79 to tie for sixth, while Hunter Hull shot 82 to grab one of the last two qualifying spots. Creek totaled 343 to finish seventh, three strokes off the final team qualifying berth. Josh Bouchard shot 90, Austin Parker 92 and Colton Smith 99 to round out the Dragons’ scoring.

Petty also shot 79 to tie for sixth place individually and earn his first regional appearance in four years of leading the Carman-Ainsworth team. The Cavs shot 398 to finish 13th, with Tyson Fields carding 103, Kaden Rytlewski 105, Noah Vanderhyde 111 and Aaron Floyd 121.

Host Davison shot 351 to finish ninth. Brandon Walker led the Cardinals with an 84, missing the last individual qualifying berth by two strokes.

Nick Goyette shot 87, Sean Pierson and Jason Raske each carded 90 and Brian Tallieu II shot 94.

Traverse City Central topped the 13-team field, shooting 313, followed by Midland 321, Flushing 324, Grand Blanc 328, Bay City Central 337 and Traverse City Central 340. Also missing the cut were Midland Dow 348, Saginaw Heritage 354, Bay City Western 357 and Alpena 365. TC West’s Alex Scott was medalist with a 74.

The top three teams and top three individuals not on those teams will advance to the state finals June 5-6 at Katke Golf Course on the campus of Ferris State University in Big Rapids.
