SWARTZ CREEK – Auditions are coming up for the Center Stage youth summer musical.

This year’s production will be Disney’s “Camp Rock.”

Auditions for performers age 8 to 20 years old will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, and Wednesday, June 8, at the Performing Arts Center. Those trying out should show up prepared to sing a short song. There will be no monologue required at audition.

Rehearsals begin June 16. Most will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, with some Fridays.

Performances will be Friday, Aug. 5, through Sunday, Aug. 7 at the PAC.

Camp Rock is a “typical Disney story,” said Director Katie Thompson. “It’s very cute and it has a lot of songs and a lot of dancing. Ginny (Redmond, director) came up with it, the kids got excited about it.

“There are some really catchy songs in it. I think it’s going to wind up being a real popular production. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun for the kids who are in the show. They are going to have a lot of fun doing this show.”

About 40 children, teens and young adults will comprise the cast. Performers do not have to have a lot of experience on stage.

“There are parts for all levels of ability, including kids who just want to give it a try and haven’t done anything before,” said Thompson. “We always welcome new kids. They don’t have to be superstars.”

The story focuses on a group of kids at music camp.

“They go there to sing and dance and play instruments, but they do all the other things you would do at summer camp, like have campfires,” said Thompson.

As the story unfolds, a shiny, new camp across the lake is threatening to run Camp Rock out of business. So the Camp Rock campers band together and prepare for a “showdown” to save their beloved get-away.

“It’s good, family entertainment,” said Thompson.

The playlist includes many popular tunes including “This is Me,” “Can’t Back Down,” “It’s On,” and “We Rock.”
