Twp. buys village police cruiser

GAINES TOWNSHIP – The Gaines Township Police Department will pay the Village of Gaines $2,300 for a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria with police package.

The car, which has 39,000 miles, will replace the 2001 Crown Victoria, said police Chief Mark Schmitzer.

The cost is the “going rate” at auction for Crown Victorias without equipment, Schmitzer said. There are sufficient funds in this year’s police budget to pay for the car, the chief said.

Village officials recently formally disbanded the police department, which has not had an officer since the previous officer retired in August, Schmitzer said. Village residents pay all township taxes, including the police levy, and are covered by the township police department. – L.R.
