Swartz Creek shuts down Birch Run in baseball

Photo by Kevin Gregory Swartz Creek’s Jaxson Beckman sets up for the put-out against Birch Run at Dow Diamond Monday. Photo by Kevin Gregory MIDLAND – The Swartz Creek baseball team had the treat of playing at Dow Diamond in Midland on Monday and knocked off Birch Run in both games, 4-1 and 10-0.

In the opener, Creek scored three times in the sixth to break a deadlock. Brandon Gilson was the winning pitcher while Anthony Anderson and Sam Anderson each had two hits to lead the offense.

Lewis Benjamin would hurl four innings in the nightcap and fan seven Panthers to earn the win. Holden Lockhart got the save in one inning of relief. Logan Mesack racked up four hits and two RBI and Hunter Mofield added two RBI. The nightcap was called on a mercy rule after five innings.

The Dragons were at Linden last Thursday and won the opener, 5-3, and then fell, 7-0, in the finale. The second game was only able to go five innings due to darkness. Creek scored three in the third of the opener, one in the fifth and one in the seventh to get the win.

Sam Anderson got the win on the bump with a six-inning performance, followed by Gilson earning the save in the seventh. Jaxon Beckman had a trio of hits, Drew Atherton added two hits and two RBI and Brad Gilson and Anthony Anderson each added a pair of hits.

In the nightcap, Linden scored all seven runs in the third. On the night, Mesack threw out five Linden baserunners attempting to steal.

The Dragons, 7-4 overall, 1-1 Metro, travel to Brandon today and go to the Bath Tournament on Saturday. – B.P.
