In brief

City to pay down debt

SWARTZ CREEK – The city stands to save about $61,350 in interest by paying off its sewer bond obligation early.

The City Council voted Monday, May 8, to allocate $458,970 to settle its debt with the county for the western trunk sewer extension. The bill will be paid in full nine years early.

The city still has two debts to manage.

About $405,952 is still owed for the construction of city hall, and City Manager Adam Zettel advises that the account will be squared within five years. City officials could consider paying that bill early, as well.

In addition, the city carries about $1,598,420 debt in pension liabilities for AFSCME workers, police and supervisors. – L.R.

City to buy carpet, fence

SWARTZ CREEK – The City Council has approved the purchase of new carpet for the public safety building, as well as fencing materials for three city-owned properties.

Owosso Carpet Center, Inc., the lone bidder, will install 1,962 square feet of carpet squares for a total of $6,955.

The current carpet was installed when the building was built in the late 1980s, said Fire Chief Brent Cole.

Department of Public Services director Tom Svrcek said it has outlived its purpose and is “disgusting.”

Action Fence of Lapeer was the sole bidder on the fence projects. They will receive $39,504 for replacing 645 feet of 6-foot vinyl fence and 270 lineal feet of chain link fence.

The new barriers will be installed around the Cappy Lane lift station, the water tower and the DPS garage on Morrish Road. – L.R.
