Softball loses in regional final

Photo by Todd Boone UNIVERSITY CENTER – An eight-inning battle at Saginaw Valley State University Saturday ended the Swartz Creek softball’s team after it lost to Midland 8-7 in the Div. 1 regional hosted by Saginaw Heritage.

It was an exciting end to the season that began with a 9-0 shutout of Traverse City Central in the regional semifinal game. Creek’s pitcher, Rachel Mackey, hurled a two-hitter with six strikeouts against Traverse City Central. Allison Dusseau led at the plate with three hits and two runs, Jessica Verran had two hits, scored two runs with a tworun homer and drove in three others. Kylee Pierce had two hits and an RBI and Madison Majestic had two hits, scored twice and drove in two runs.

Mackey gave up 10 hits and five earned runs in the final against Midland. Rachel Scofield had two hits including a triple that drove in two runs and scored a run. Verran had a hit, her second homer of the day, scored once and drove in a run. Dusseau had a hit, scored a run and drove in two runs.

Swartz Creek ended its season at 23-19 and Mackey finished the season with a 23-15 record, with 272 strikeouts, which places her second in Swartz Creek’s record book behind Madisen Henry, who had 306 strikeouts last year. — L.P.
