Beet truck rolls

CLAYTON TOWNSHIP – Authorities shut down two state trunklines last week after a tractor-trailer overturned and dumped sugar beets across the roadways.

The incident occurred about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, at the intersection of M-13 and M-21/Corunna Road.

The driver, a Vernon man, was hauling beets from Spezia Farm in Corunna to the processing facility in Albee Township, when the cargo shifted as he attempted to turn from eastbound Corunna Road to northbound M-13, according to a fire department report.

The roads remained closed for more than two hours while an elevator worker used a front loader to scoop up the beets and transfer them to another trailer.

Mike’s Towing then righted the tipped trailer.

The driver was not harmed. – L.R.
