Area grad paints with beer in ArtPrize Nine

ALLENDALE – Andrea Photiou, a graduate of Swartz Creek High School, will compete in ArtPrize Nine from September 20 to October 8, with her submission “BEERly Even Art”.

Photiou’s entry will feature iconic images of Grand Rapids such as La Grande Vitesse, the B.O.B, and the Blue Bridge. Her art is similar in style to watercolor, except for one tasty twist: Photiou paints with craft beer.

“‘BEERly Even Art’ is inspired by the beer industry in Grand Rapids as well as artist Karen Eland,” Photiou said. “After moving to Grand Rapids in 2012, I was instantly infatuated with the profound impact the industry had on the city and wanted to create something to truly represent the iconic ‘Beer City USA’ that I fell in love with.”

Photiou primarily learned her artistic talents at the Hellenic International Studies of the Arts in Paros, Greece. She is currently pursuing a bachelor of science degree in advertising and public relations at Grand Valley State University.

ArtPrize is an open, independently-organized, international art competition which takes place for 19 days each fall in Grand Rapids. More than $500,000 in prizes are awarded each year, which include a $200,000 prize awarded entirely by public vote and another $200,000 prize awarded by a jury of art experts. – L.R.
