SWARTZ CREEK – Six veterans or their survivors have applied for inclusion on a unique memorial to be unveiled at the Cage Community Center later this year.

“It’s going to be something people have never seen before,” said David Simancek, director of Child and Community Development for the Swartz Creek Community Schools.

At the heart of the memorial will be a digital kiosk that will tell the stories of Swartz Creek area veterans. To be includ- ed, veterans must have lived within the Swartz Creek school district at some time, or must have made a significant contribution to the Swartz Creek community.

The kiosk will scroll through veterans’ stories every 20 seconds, and visitors will be able to search for specific names.

Swartz Creek High School students will work with the veterans or their families to produce the narratives, which will be accompanied by photos.

The Community Mission Board, a group of representatives from the schools, area churches and civic organizations, is heading up the project.

Simancek said they hope to unveil the memorial on Veterans’ Day, Nov. 11.

He said the digital kiosk can provide unlimited space to honor area residents and former residents who have served in the military. The kiosk will be placed in front of a wall displaying emblems from the various branches of the military. Flags will stand on either side of the kiosk.

Applications are available at the Cage, the Swartz Creek VFW/AMVETS hall and American Legion, and online at www.swartzcreek.org.

The Genesee County Department of Veterans Services will verify the information and can help veterans and families acquire the necessary documentation.

The committee also must raise about $10,000 to fund the installation. So far, they’ve received about $620 in contributions.

Three levels of donations have been established: Red ($1,000 or more), White ($500 to $999) and Blue ($100 to $499).

To make a contribution, contact Simancek at 810-591-4346, or send checks payable to Swartz Creek Wall of Honor Project to Swartz Creek Wall of Honor Project, c/o David Simancek, 8197 Miller Road, Swartz Creek, MI 48473.
