Firefighter trainees hired

GAINES TOWNSHIP – The Gaines Township Fire Department has three new firefighter trainees: Roy Long, Eric Linton and James McCormic. – L.R.

Twp. hires inspector

GAINES TOWNSHIP – Merle West is the new plumbing and mechanical inspector for Gaines Township. West replaces Bob Davis, who resigned. – L.R.

New homes going up

GAINES TOWNSHIP – Gaines Township issued 26 permits in July, including three for new homes being built on Beers Road and Geraldine Circle. Township officials have said the growth is a good sign for the local economy. – L.R.

Blight fight continues

GAINES TOWNSHIP – The township code enforcement officer continues to tackle issues of blight. July code enforcement activity included: Notice was given for blight and a building code violation on South Duffield Road. The property owner has until Aug. 18 to correct the problems or the township will issue a citation. The township called in H&M Landscaping to remove noxious weeds at a property on West Baldwin Road. The owners also were advised to remove junk. Owners of property on Chin Maya removed an unregistered vehicle, per order of the township, and have until Aug. 16 to address other issues or a citation will be issued. – L.R.

July emergency stats

GAINES TOWNSHIP – There were 120 calls for emergency services in Gaines Township in July. Of those, nine were in the Village of Gaines. Township police responded to 75 of the 911 calls plus 10 walk-ins. Township officers also issued 10 citations, gave 24 verbal warnings, performed 17 business and 40 residential property checks, obtained one misdemeanor warrant and made one misdemeanor and one felony arrest. Gaines Township responded seven times to the Metro Police Authority service district; Metro police handled six priority-1 calls in Gaines Township. There have been 1,014 incidents so far tis year, as compared to 978 for the same time last year. Township firefighters had 10 fire calls and 16 medical runs. – L.R.
