Hometown Days to award scholarship

SWARTZ CREEK – The Swartz Creek Hometown Days Committee has announced that it will award a $500 scholarship to a local student this year.

“We had been talking about it for the last few years,” said Brenda Huyck, general chairman. “It’s another way of giving back. We’re really passionate about giving back to our community. That’s what’s important, to give back to the community that supports us during the festival and all year long.”

Members of the Hometown Days board of directors, who wish to remain anonymous, contributed the funds to support the scholarship so no money comes out of the festival budget, Huyck said.

The scholarship is open to anyone who is a student in the Swartz Creek Community Schools or lives in the Swartz Creek school district who plans to attend or is currently attending an accredited college, university or trade school.

Applicants must be maintaining at least a 2.5 grade point average, be a U.S. citizen, and have valid identification.

“We felt it was important to offer this to not only high school students but also for someone who is trying to continue their education and may not have all the funds to realize that,” Huyck said. “This could help them pay a portion of what they need to fulfill that goal.”

Applications are available on the Hometown Days website. Forms must be printed out and mailed in with a 500- word essay.

Application deadline is March 1. The award will be announced in May.

“Most kids grow up with Hometown Days, so it will be nice to see them apply for something they’ve been a part of for so many years,” said Huyck.
