Planning Commission to review site plan for new housing development in township

FLUSHING TWP. — A proposed housing development geared toward senior citizens will go before the Flushing Township Planning Commission for review next month.

On April 10, the Planning Commission will examine a site plan submitted by developers with Flushing BIBI Paradise Villas for a 20-acre parcel on 7533 N. McKinley Road near Mt. Morris Road. The property was rezoned last September from C-2 and RU-3 to RU-2 upon request from the parcel owner.

During the March 9 Board of Trustees meeting, Flushing Township Zoning Administrator Chris Czyzio said developers are looking to construct single-story garden apartments and townhouses that would be ideal for seniors looking for independent housing options.

“It’s a very good use of that piece of property, especially with the zoning change, because it promotes less density (for housing),” he said. “The RU-3 zoning that was there previously would have allowed a more dense use of the property, but the new RU-2 designation eliminates that possibility.”

Supervisor Fred Thorsby said while the houses are being marketed toward the 55 and older demographic, they will not be restricted by age. He also said the development plan in no way resembles high-rise apartments or low-income housing, contrary to rumors that have circulated on social media.

The Planning Commission will review the site plan on April 10 at 7 p.m. at Flushing Township Hall on 6524 N. Seymour Road. — B.G.
